Residents of Japan spend endless weeks planning this celebration. Special foods are purchased and decorations are made for the front doors from bamboo, ropes and pine branches. It is believed that these provide long life and health. Seaweed and/or ferns are hung on roofs of homes to bring good luck and happiness. One known tradition is the resolutions, and this goes back as far as early Babylonians. The Babylonians had a very popular resolution and that was the promise to return all borrowed farming equipment. Today, resolutions include: quit smoking and lose weight. How many times have these resolutions being broken? There is a four-day long parade in Nepal during the celebration of New Year and in Greece the residents carry ships, apples and stars figures. The children of Lebanon and Syria parade from house to house to celebrate this tradition. |
